What is a mini golden?

I have had several people ask me "what is a miniature Golden Retriever and what are the benefits???"
In answer to the the first question, a miniature Golden Retriever is a mix between a golden retriever and a cocker spaniel. The registered name is Golden Cocker Retriever
Our puppies mother is an AKC Golden Retriever, she is an English Cream making her almost a white color which I absolutely love! She comes from Champion show lines on her mother and her father's side. Champion means the dog was examined carefully in look and temperament and outperformed other dogs in it's breed, champion lines are good to have in your dog especially if you want a good temperament. The puppies father is an AKC Cocker Spaniel also nice champion bloodlines.
The benefits of  mini Goldens:

  •  Generally less health problems. Hip dysplasia, eye problems, and ear infections can be dramatically reduced in this combination of breeding.
  • The puppies tend to take on more of the Golden Retriever look but not always.
  • Smaller size, my goal is a smaller size around 25-50 lbs and about 12-15 inches tall. Golden Retrievers are generally 65-95 lbs, Cocker Spaniels are 15-30 lbs. My golden is 70 lbs and the Cocker is 25 lbs, both dogs are on the smaller side of their breed.
  • Less shedding, because daddy dog is non shedding this helps to reduce the shedding in our mini goldens.
Our mother dog, Taylor's Pinkerton Paulette or "Pinkie" for short, is a 70 lb golden retriever and the father St James Gianni Versace or "Gianni" for short is a smaller 25 lb cocker spaniel. Gianni has a soft non-shedding coat, perfect for what we were looking for in our puppies. Our mini Golden Piper is 38lbs and she is a great small/medium dog.
Below are pictures of mama Pinkie and father Gianni. Both fabulous dogs!

4 weeks old!

Our puppies turned 4 weeks old, are they the cutest puff balls? They got to try puppy food for the first time and they seemed eager to try it. They also got to go outside for the first time today.
They have been busy, we took the puppies on their first outing last week to our daughter Anna's 2nd grade class. Anna did a power point presentation on the birth of the puppies and gave the kids some fun facts about what it is like to raise 8 pups. On Thursday (12-11) they are all going to our son Eli's 5th grade class because he wanted to bring them for show-and-tell as well.

Here they are outside for the first time trying out some puppy food.

We feed Nature's Domain because it seems to be a good quality food from the research I have done and I love how Costco sells it in bulk at a great price.

The puppy food was a hit!

After about a half hour outside this morning the babies were getting kind of cold, so back home to the whelping box in our master bathroom.

My American Soldier Brother

Our Puppies Arrived on November 10th 2014

What an amazing experience to to have the blessing of watching the miracle of birth. 8 adorable puppies, 7 males and 1 female. Pinkie was incredible and such a sweet, attentive mama.
Me in the whelping bow with half the puppies delivered

Pinkie's puppies came as an early birthday present for our daughter Anna whose birthday was the next day November 11th, she was so excited. We allowed our children to stay home from school and watch the birth. They were really helpful and fascinated by the experience. The delivery also thankfully occurred on my husband Jeff's usual day off, so he was there to help and he took most of these pictures. I am so appreciative of him supporting me in this dream and helping me make all of this possible. I couldn't run our little family kennel so well without him.

I have to give a shout out to my friend Taunra, who helped immensely during the delivery. After the first two pups were born 4 minutes apart, I told our son Noah to "Call Taunra, and let her know I need HELP!" She came right away and was such moral support, she got two pups who were having difficulty breathing in stable condition.
Eight beautiful Mini Golden Retrievers

All our puppies survived delivery, whew! Mama and babies are all healthy and well.

Puppy Registration Papers

I have decided that International Designer Pet registry would be my top choice for registering our puppies.

Growth chart

Pinkie is 8 weeks old as of yesterday. I did a weight check yesterday and has it on kg she was 5.3kg. Today I weighed her in pounds she is 12lbs 3oz.

Eden and Pinkie checking out the new diapers from Costco

Our first week with our new puppy has been wonderful! I love the smell of a new puppy and she is so soft and darling. Between all our cute kids and dog, we have one adorable household.
Pinkie seems very intelligent and easy to potty train. We are crate training and she already feels quite at home in her crate. She is chewing everything in sight including us. I filled a spray bottle with water and added a little vinegar to use as Pinkie's correction tool and it is working. She already knows she is not to chew Eden or the entire family will mobilize, everyone takes Eden's safety very seriously around here.
